Coaches comments: Our final trial match before the season commences, and it looks like all our pre-season training is paying off. We started the match on a high, and the morale continued through to the end of the game. There were a few brilliant individual performances, but the biggest positive to come from this was how the forwards and backs started playing as extensions of each other. There are some things we can work on for efficiency, but overall, this is a great performance and result.

Man of the match goes to Nick Jooste, who is quickly settling into the club. Siyang Yu

Coaches comments: The girls had a very successful first tournament of the year. Starting off with a game against Linfield, Mac Uni started strong out of the gates, with tries to Sophia and Kat to get the score to 12-0 before holding off a late push by Linfield to win 12-5. The second game against UNSW proved to be a much more physically demanding game. Both teams aimed up in defence before Meg crashed over beside the uprights to give us the lead at half time. With UNSW having the weight of possession in the second half, they were eventually able to equalise, before Sav, Sammy and Corby were able to make some try saving tackles late in the game to finish off 5-5. Heading into the final game against Hunters Hill, the women were in a position to clinch first in our pool with a win against a highly fancied opposition. Hunters Hill started strongly, getting a try within a minute of kick off. Our first responded quickly with tries to Sally, Kat and Soph all before half time to get to 21-5 at the break. The women defended their hearts out in the second half. Turning away phase after phase of attacking rugby from Hunters Hill to hold out 21-17, and finish first in their pool. The Semi final against Briars was a well balanced game, with both teams trading tries to leave the scores 14-12 with minutes to go. Macquarie were awarded a penalty 30 meters out, but as the ref reached into his pocket to yellow card a Briars player for repeated high tackles, the siren went, and we finished on the losing end of a 14-12 scoreline.

As a coach I couldn’t be prouder of the effort throughout the day by the girls. We’ve worked hard in the preseason, and to be able to play the positive style of football we’ve talked about was inspiring to see. Players of the tournament: Sophia and Lucy. Daniel Hawkins
