Coaches comments: An incredibly successful day for the women, and on I’m sure that no one there will forget. The girls handed Macquarie the first piece of silverware for the year as they went undefeated in their competition to take out the Division 3 title in dramatic fashion.

The day started strongly, with Macquarie scoring from all positions on the field against Wollongong to run out winners, 48-0. Lucy set the tone early with dominant tackles and steals, before getting herself a try under the sticks. The beacons kept pressuring the opposition attack, causing turnovers which we were good enough to capitalise on. Special mention to both El, Alex and Zoe who got their first tries in Macquarie Colours to their name in this one.

The girls followed up their performance with a strong showing against a Gordon team looking for revenge after our last meeting. Despite Gordon trying to swing the ball early, a strong defensive effort disrupted their attack too much, and we held onto it long enough to score the opening points. The tries flowed after that, running away winners 31-0.

The final game came against Lindfield. Our only previous meeting was a gritty win 12-5 so we were expecting a tough game. The girls had a point to prove it seemed as they piled on three tries in the first half, and 3 more in the second on the back of some mighty defensive hits from Meg and Fiana. The final scoreline 32-0.

Hopes were high heading into the final as the girls looked for revenge against the team that bundled them out of the previous tournament. Both teams traded hits in the opening minutes before Kat drifted across the field before straightening up and splitting their defence in two. Running away 50 meters to score next to the upright. Minutes later Chip went blind from the ruck to score another runaway try. A conversion 15 meters to the right of the posts was kicked by Emma to leave the scores 14-0 at half time. With a point to prove, Manly came out in the second half firing. Spreading the ball early from inside their half, they quickly got the margin down to 7. An error off the kickoff allowed them to get the margin down to 2 with still 4 minutes left in the half. The girls defended their try line with desperate determination with phase after phase of Manly attack turned away. With a minute left, Sally made a break from our try line and sprinted 80 metres with 4 manly girls following. Managing to find support, our girls held on for the final few seconds before celebrating the first Macquarie win in over a decade.

I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. They’ve worked so hard in rebuilding the team and I can’t wait to see how far they’ll go this season. Daniel Hawkins
